Frigid Temperatures and Rare Snow Event

This is the current Watch/Warning map as issued by the National Weather Service. Winter Weather Advisories, Winter Storm Watches/Warnings, Hard Freeze Warnings, Blizzard Warnings just to name a few. One of those rare sights where a large swath of the country from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico are experiencing quite the opposite from global warming.

Temperatures are reaching record levels as far south as Florida. The areas in dark blue near the Gulf Coast indicates Hard Freeze Warnings. I am definitely a warm weather person, and when I see the current forecast for where I am at in Nashville, I do not get very excited. Nashville is expected to have HIGH TEMPERATURES only reaching the upper-teens this upcoming weekend.

The big story right now at least for us in the Tennessee area is the potential for some significant snowfall. Of course by 'significant' I mean enough to turn heads in Tennessee. Folks in "snow alley" would scoff at the big deal we are making out of this winter weather stuff. For those who only see one or two MINOR blankets of snow per year, this upcoming system will definitely be the first major news story of 2010. The National Weather Service predicts 2-4" in Nashville, and 1-3" in Chattanooga.

It is very possible for amounts to be significantly less and significantly more than what is predicted. Snow is a hard one to gauge, but one thing is for sure....for the first time in years, I think it is safe to say that 100% of the State of Tennessee will experience a blanket of white stuff by sundown on Thursday (1-7-10).

From a CoCoRaHs perspective, it will be very fascinating to learn about water content from within the snowfall. Unfortunately, I will be traveling to Chattanooga on Thursday, so I will be unable to experience the storm in its entirety utilizing the weather station tools I have. Thankfully, the owner of another CoCoRaHs station in Sumner County will be coming by and taking the readings from my gauge on Friday morning.

Time will tell what happens....now we sit back and observe!
