INTERESTING FACT: The first severe weather watch in 2009 was issued on January 3, 2009 for Southeast Louisana, Southern Mississippi & the Coastal Waters of the Gulf. It was a Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued ahead of an approaching upper trough. Interesting how we are dealing with almost the EXACT same target area a year later. In 2009, a total of 811 Severe Weather Watches were issued....the last taking place on December 24, 2009 for Southeast Georgia, Southern and Central South Carolina & the Coastal Waters of the Atlantic. Time will tell how 2010 will compare against the stats from last year. I will be excited to watch what Mother Nature has to offer in the coming months.
As of the posting of this blog, a second tornado watch has been issued for the Ark/La/Tex areas. Storm reports are slowly beginning to appear at the Storm Prediction Center. Two confirmed tornado reports have taken place in Louisiana as well as a few reports of large hail in Northeast Texas. More reports are possible as storms are expected to increase in coverage and intensity over the next few days. The storm system shifts eastward on Thursday, placing parts of Middle Tenneessee and the Eastern Gulf/South Atlantic Coastal areas under a slight risk for severe thunderstorms.
