Tornado in Crockett County Brings Back Geocaching Memories

Oh man! I just found out that one of the four reported tornadoes in Tennessee today happened in Crockett County. Allow me to explain why this is significant to me:

Crockett County is one of the stops Hilltop Hiker and I made while completing the Tennessee County Geocache Challenge. This challenge requires geocachers to find at least one cache in each of the 95 counties in Tennessee.

We arrived in Crockett County late at night, and the geocache we picked out to find was in a cemetery. So, we arrived at the cemetery and began to search for the cache. After a few minutes, the darkness and quiet was suddenly interrupted by a half dozen sheriff cars all driving up the hill and shining their spotlights on us. Knowing that they were definitely coming for us, we calmly walked toward them with the box in our hands to explain why we were there.

The first officer that I talked too immediately identified with geocaching, and the mood quickly changed from tense, to lighthearted in a matter of seconds. We chatted with the "crowd" of good-ole-boy sheriffs from Crockett County for quite a while. It was a unique experience to say the least.

Turns out, they were looking for someone in a white pickup who had recently vandalized a nearby home. Unfortunately for us, we were driving a white pickup, and we definitely looked out of place snooping around in a cemetery late at night. After they told us good luck and have fun, they left as quickly as they came and went on to look for the REAL vandals.

So the take-away from it all: We were able to leave without earning a criminal record, and Crockett County is now my favorite TN county because of that experience.

The National Weather Service reports a possible tornado is to blame for damage to two homes and numerous trees down this afternoon 4 mi. SW of Alamo, TN in Crockett County.
